The new season is officially underway, bringing with it the promise of cooler weather, rainy days, and, of course, jumpers - can I get a "yay!"?. While autumn is well-known for having its tried and true staples (aka skinny jeans and riding boots), it also provides the perfect opportunity to switch things up a bit. I've personally been loving these eye-catching pieces this season with their unexpected colours, flattering silhouettes, and modern design details - all of which I spotted when clicking through ELLE and VOGUE's NYFW street style photo album.

The Pink Jumper

Jumpers are undeniably among those must-have pieces to stock up on on at the first hint of autumnal temperatures. This season, instead of sticking to a neutral colour palette (which has, for better or worse, become the norm during the cold-weather months), jumpers in shades of pink are perfect to add a pop of colour to an otherwise more simple outfit. Feminine, complementary to all skin tones, and just plain pretty, pink is definitely the colour to be wearing this season (even better when worn on Wednesdays...). Who What Wear has even deemed the pink jumper to be the jumper of the year, proven by the fact that there are so many brands stocking the style for fall. Besides the shade’s mood-lifting capabilities (the colour looking even better against grey skies), pink is a winner when worn with almost every hue on the colour wheel—denim, black, navy, cream, and brown included—making it an oh-so-versatile choice.

Wide-Leg Trousers

It's not a secret that skinnies have reigned supreme in the world of pants and jeans for a while now. But there’s a new queen in town this season: the wide-leg trouser. Equal parts polished and chic, the wide-leg trouser features a hint of Old Hollywood style (think Katharine Hepburn) and all of the glamour that goes along with it - and let's be real, they're so comfy too. Designers haven’t been shy about sending a whole slew of wide-legs options down the runway—from those with a pop of colour or pattern to shades of neutral black, cream, and grey. Find your favourite wide-leg trouser and then simply pair with a tight turtleneck or, as this post suggests, a silky camisole and cropped jacket or blazer. No matter the top it's worn with, tucking the extra fabric into the pants help define your body shape and create the perfect contrast to the voluminous cut of the wide leg silhouette.

The Corset

This blast from the past likely isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of essential autumn fashion, but its on the rise to becoming an absolute must-have this season. It's time to put aside any misgivings you might have about corsets being restrictive because, this season, they’ve been deconstructed. Prada featured them worn open and over the top of clothes, making them the focal point of the ensemble rather than the foundation piece of way back when whose main purpose was to create a smaller waist—ouch. In fact, with models at Loewe donning armour-like gold designs over white t-shirts and other brands like Louis Vuitton featuring tough looking leather variations, the modern corset has a warrior-princess look to it. Create a perfect mix between hard and soft by wearing one on top of a pleated maxi or silky gown seen in this collection or go back to basics with a simple shirt and a beautiful pair of jeans.
